Description

State of the Grocery Industry 2007 Summary Report (Census of Retail Trade 2007)

  • Supermarkets continue to lose share for food-at-home merchandise showing a .5%/year slippage since 2002 - a great improvement from -1.5% 1997 to 2002.

  • Nationwide, weekly food potential for food-at-home has grown 4.2%/year.

  • Supermarkets sales have grown 3.7%/year and share of sales (total of Supermarkets, Clubs and Supercenters) have dropped to 72% from 78% in 2002 88% in 1997;

  • The number of Supermarkets has declined from 69,461 in 1997 to 66,092 in 2002 to 64,348 in 2007.

  • Clubs and Supercenters sales have grown 14%/year and share of sales (total of Supermarkets, Clubs and Supercenters) has increased to 28% from 22% in 2002 and 12% in 1997;

  • The number of Clubs and Supercenters has increased from 1,530 in 1997 to 2,915 in 2002 to 4,259 in 2007.

  • Total combined sales for Supermarkets, Clubs and Supercenters is growing at a higher rate than the change in food-at-home potential;

  • This combined group of stores continues to capture Leakage and leakage levels should be declining in areas with new Clubs and Supercenters.

Wholesale Clubs and Supercenters Detail - Supermarket Type Merchandise (Census of Retail Trade 2012)

  • As a group, these 5,116 stores achieve 64.7% of their sales from traditional STM (Supermarket Type Merchandise), and increase over 62.4% in 2007 and 60.3% in 2002.

Pharmacy and Drug Store Detail - Supermarket Type Merchandise (Census of Retail Trade 2007)

  • As a group, these 42,045 stores achieve 95% of their sales from traditional STM (Supermarket Type Merchandise);

  • Prescription Sales are 73.2% of total sales up from 70.5% in 2002.

Discount Department Stores Detail - Supermarket Type Merchandise (Census of Retail Trade 2007)

  • As a group, these 5,001 stores achieve 33% of their sales from traditional STM (Supermarket Type Merchandise).
